For Joan Nita Ward
Uncertain Symmetries
A Blue Flower
Traversing the landscape of my years
I sought Her then and still seek Her now.
That divine elusive Queen of mine;
Who hides Her sweetest self from me
Amid voices heard afar, and flowers;
In goddesses, cats, and womankind.
To find and hold Her, this Fool’s goal,
A Heart song’s transcendent harmony.

Reflecting on
a Figure of Guanyin
In an infinite universe
where stars are without number.
To count them is our solace in Night’s dark shrine,
As we, merely mortal, struggle to define the Divine.
As if in vainly naming we might change our place,
To be lifted on high unto Heaven’s limitless grace.
But I’ve chosen to see the brilliance of only two;
Fireflies in space; illuminating a face that is You.
Here I can see two souls embracing, yet set apart,
Two mirrors that reflect truth, in one human heart.
In an infinite universe Love also defies our measure,
Heaven’s gift to us remains our greatest treasure.
